Anyone Can Be A Horse Photographer
Horses can run, jump, and maybe roll over, but they don't pose. Only one person can do it, and she is the lady equestrian photographer from Pasadena, California, whose works are displayed in many celebrity homes. While her office is a motor home that follows tracks and shows all over the state, she has photographed the Olympics in Montreal and even British princess Anne, and she started out with a camera borrowed from Pasadena City College. This graduate of Pasadena High School chose to study photography at PCC, for which she practiced on horses for pragmatic reasons. The Eaton Canyon Riding Stables were like a second home to her since she was 10 years old. With the loaned camera she snapped local horses on weekends as homework for her class. Her hobby transformed into a full-out career after her first photo sold, and she left behind music, art, and journalism.
Two renowned photographers took her on as an apprentice at a Santa Barbara show, after which she helped them pose and focus horses at shows, tracks, and state fairs all over the country. Another famous pair took her on, and they traveled all over California. Today, she uses a Swedish camera with German lens, and her mother takes care of the business side of things.
She catches them at just the right moment, when making a six-foot jump or nosing it to first place. However, horses also get down on all four hoofs for formal portraits. Some horses even show their pleasure with being photographed. She found horses that immediately perk their ears or raise their heads when they feel a camera being focused on them. Even good photographers put a little effort into their photos. Mid-air with legs bent at the right angle is the best bet for hunters and jumpers. The best pose for Tennessee walkers, on the other hand, is with their front hoofs in action and an over reaching hoof with their hind legs. A stock horse at his best is shot stopping in a slide and a spirited saddle horse is shown off at his best with his legs at their highest point and his head held high. Some of her prized pictures are of the Peruvian Paso, almost an endangered species, whose aficionados are carefully trying to perpetuate the colorful breed from South America. It would be best to snap a picture when their forelegs are pointed away from their bodies. They make great photographs with their riders who usually sport traditional white ponchos and elaborate bridles and saddles.
Photography is the key to meeting celebrity horse enthusiasts. She has even made it to royal circles. She got the chance to rub shoulders with the Queen after taking photos of Princess Anne at the Montreal Olympics. When she asked the Queen if it made her nervous to watch her daughter taking the high jumps, Queen Elizabeth replied that yes she did. She began to photograph fork lifts for a little variation, even though she fills her spare time with swimming, back packing, bicycling, panning for gold and sometimes even horse riding.
With fork lifts, there is no need to look for perked ears.
