Opera Singer
Am I too old to become an Opera singer?
I'm 18 years old. I've never took singing lessons, but I learned a bit of piano and recorder(if that's helpful in any way). I want to become a professional opera singer and succeed in that. Do I have the same chances as the best opera singers out there or is it too late? Help please!

You are still very young vocally. In voice, unlike other instruments, lots of people don't start studying seriously until they get to college, or they start college having had only a couple of years of lessons. To some extent, your question depends on what kind of voice you have and how well you sing naturally as well as how well you respond to voice lessons once you start. Basic musicianship is important too as well as a facility for foreign languages.
You should understand that the world of opera is very competitive and that it takes more than just a great voice to succeed. Are you driven, disciplined, and very highly motivated? Can you persist in spite of rejection? Are you good at networking and putting yourself out there? Are you a dynamic performer? If you look like a movie star that helps. There are so many good singers out there that companies can cast based on your look as well as your voice.
Contact the music program at a college near you and sing for someone. They could advise you what you would need to do between now and the beginning of the academic year next fall to be admitted as a music major. They could also give you some idea of what is involved and how suited you are for this path. You should understand that most graduates of music programs are teaching in some capacity, whether in elementary or high school, privately, or in a university setting. You can teach K-12 music with a bachelor's in music education - college teaching positions are also competitive and these days you are unlikely to be considered without a doctoral degree.
