Advice on restoring old cabinet?
I have recently claimed an old cabinet off my mum and dad (I am not sure exactly how old, it belonged to my grandmother before my mother acquired it and I am guessing it to be about 80 years plus). I have admired it for years and always wanted to restore it. It has been painted a ghastly orange/red colour and appears to have a rather nice dark wood underneath. I would like to know what steps I should take to 1. get the paint off and 2. bring out the natural luster of the wood underneath.

You need paint and varnish remover. You brush it on, keeping it wet with the solvent. Let the solvent work, and lift the old paint and finish off the wood. Patience to let it work, and keeping the solvent wet is the secret. It will take two or three applications. When it is lifting, scrape and lift it off with a putty knife. It is not hard, but it is messy. Lay down plastic, or do it on a garage floor. Use a wire brush, stiff brush to get into any ornamental decor. On your final removal, use a medium steel wool. Lightly sand before revarnishing using a fine or semi fine sand paper. Choose the varnish of your desire, gloss, satin or? It will take at least three coats of varnish. Remove all your hardware prior to stripping the paint. When you are done, it will look brand new. It will remain a treasure for you to pass on.
