Landscape exhibit: An eco movement, 19th-century style (The State)
The roar of the white, cascading water can almost be heard in Louisa Davis
Minot's "Niagara Falls." The 1818 oil on linen painting pays homage to both
the fury and beauty of the natural waterfalls.
Minot's work is one of 45 paintings in "Nature and the Grand American Vision:
Masterpieces of the Hudson River School Painters," an exhibition that opens
today at the Columbia Museum of Art. That movement's coterie of artists,
dubbed the Hudson River School because of their studies and reflections on
nature around the river, painted respectful and devout strokes.
It would've been hard for the painters, working in the 19th century, to
believe that there would ever be a question of sustainability and excessive
consumption, topics that dominant environmental discourse today. The landscape
and its resources, for them, was something to behold and admire. In a sense,
the Hudson River School painters were early conservationists.
"You're humbled before nature," said Will South, the museum's chief curator.
"You use it, you burn logs and you kill game, but there was a reverence about
it. Genuine, heartfelt, authentic. They were believers."
