Examining What Was Achieved During The Copenhagen Climate Change Conference
Recently there was a conference in Copenhagen, Denmark that was intended to debate a resolution that needed to be made to fight the consequences of greenhouse gasses and global warming. 192 countries came together to try to provide an answer to the issue and it was quite the event. Can you imagine the effort and will-power of having 192 countries all together attempting to come up with a plan that needs spending untold billions of dollars and attempting to get everybody to agree on how best to spend it?

There had been one point in the summit where some of the developing nations all around the globe walked out of the talks because they felt that their interests were not being addressed as much as the larger, more developed countries. They eventually came back to the table but it certainly made things more difficult to get a general agreement.
Climate change activists from all parts of the world also converged on Copenhagen in the conference and they protested and called for action each day of the summit. Most of them were arrested for being a little too in your face and there were plenty of scuffles with the police through the length of the event. Many people feel very dedicated to the topic of global warming and that is understandable.
Climate change threatens our existence on this planet if you recognise all the issues that it presents to us. When you couple that with global leaders who are reluctant to change, it becomes comprehensible that folks who feel deeply about this could do everything that they can to try to insure that progress is made.
Almost all of those folks were searching for a legally binding agreement to come out of this conference, but that was not accomplished. Sadly consensus could not be reached between all of the nations. The US did put forth what came to be known as the Copenhagen Accord that looks like it should be the centerpiece of the process going forward.
Some leaders hailed this as a great start, while some of the others are calling it a "toothless failure." The deal was basically worked out between the US, China, and a handful of other bigger more developed countries. President Barak Obama made an appearance at the conference, but that was about it. He came in and worked with some of the other nations and had a resolution drafted. That was pretty much it. Then the summit agreed to recognise the accord, but there wasn't a vote or anything near a binding agreement.
It's sad to see that when we've got some real issues that we're facing in the world that might affect the very existence of humans on this planet in the not-too-distant future and politicians appear to be busy playing mind games and making an attempt to score points over other nations. The way this conference worked, the most important and strongest countries in the world came in and imposed their will on the remainder of the world and then walked out. This kind of behaviour isn't going to resolve any of the issues on the planet. We will not talk our way out of the situation that we've got with global warming.
